February 2017 – Setsubun and Valentine’s Day

Class 1 (Kindergarten) - Ms. Ozeki

Lesson Goals:
- Be able to write letters with appropriate pencil pressure.
- Sing "A-I-U-E-O" song with correct pronunciations.

Class Activities:
- Strengthen reading skills through a word card game that includes Hiragana that students learned since September.
- Create Valentine ’s Day card using origami.

Grammar and Vocabulary:
- Find words that start with "na,ni,nu,ne,no".
- Write those words in a proper stroke and nice handwriting.

Class 2 (Elementary Lower Grades) - Ms. Umehata

Lesson Goals:
- Enjoy Setsubun Festival through some activities associated with the festival.
- Be familiar with Japanese folk stories.
- Origami.

Class Activities:
- Enjoy soy bean throwing activity
- Read workbooks out loud.
- Make "Oni (demon)" mask and "Sanpou (a wooden tray used for Shinto rituals)" out of origami.

Grammar and Vocabulary:
- "Setsubun no mamemaki(Bean throwing)", "Oni (demon)", "Kiba (fang), "Tsuno (horn)", "Mayu (eyebrow)", "Me (eye)", "Kuchi(mouth)", "Oni wa soto, Fuku wa uchi (demon out! Fortune In!)"
- Tsugiha~~desu, Next up, ~~~~.
- sankaku - triangle, shikaku - rectangle.

Class 3 (Elementary middle grades) - Ms. Yamada

Lesson Goals:
- Understand the Japanese sentence structures.
- Read aloud - poems and short stories.

Class Activities:
- In January, students will lean the appropriate use of subjects and verbs.
- In February, students will develop more stills on the use of subjects and verbs. In addition to the skill, use kanji learned so far to create sentences with 5W1H (when, where, who, what, why, how)

Grammar and Vocabulary:
- Review 80 kanjis for the first graders.
- Make Valentine’s Day cards.

Class 4 (Elementary Upper Grades) - Ms. Oota

Lesson Goals:
- Understand the origin of Setsubun and Sekku (literally, the point that separates one season from another).
- Comprehend the parts of kanjis, then review the meaning of each components.

Class Activities:
- Fold Sanpou with Origami
- Review and use kanjis with same parts.

Grammar and Vocabulary:
- Learn the parts of kanjis - ninben, sanzui, kusakannmuri, and ukannmuri.
- Words related to origami - yotsuori, nakaori, and orime.

Class 5 (StepUp course) - Ms. Sakamoto

Lesson Goals:
- Write an essay including - introduction, body including more than 3 sentences, conclusion.

Class Activities:
- Create 4 panel comic.
- Write a brief descriptions of "Setsubun".
- Read about "Food / Eating", and write brief descriptive essay.

Grammar and Vocabulary:
- Since the first semester, we have been reviewing 13 kanjis weekly from the list of 410 kanji required for AP Japanese. BY the end of January, students have leaned approximately 200 kanjis. When writing sentences and short essays, be sure to incorporate those kanjis.
