March Theme: Hinamatsuri (Girls’ Day)

Class I & II

Study Objectives:

- To learn the origin of “Momo no Sekku”(Peach Festival) and deepen interest in “Hinamatsuri”(Girls’ Day).
- To enjoy singing the recital song.
- To be able to write hiragana with proper pressure on the pencil.

Learning Activities:

- Make origami for Hinamatsuri and learn the basics of origami.
- Learn words related to Hinamatsuri. (Ohina-sama, Odairi-sama, etc.)
- Practice the recital song with a dance routine so the student will enjoy singing it on his/her own.

Vocabulary and Grammar:

Collect words containing “a,I,u,e.o”; learn to write those words neatly and in the correct stroke order.

Class III

Study Objectives:

- To build interest in Hinamatsuri through related stories and hina dolls.
- To understand the usage of katakana.
- To practice for the recital.

Learning Activities:

- Make hina dolls with origami.
- Collect katakana words.
- Learn the lines for the recital.
- Understand his/her role in the recital.

Vocabulary and Grammar:

- Odairi-sama (Emperor doll), Ohina-sama (Empress doll), bonbori (lantern), momo no hana (peach blossom), hina arare (doll rice cracker), hishi mochi (diamond shape rice cake), sannin kanjo (three court ladies), gonin bayashi (five musicians).
- Collect katakana words in his/her daily life.
- Practice for the recital.

Lower Grade

Study Objectives:

- To be able to explain in Japanese, the process of making takuan (pickled daikon radish) through the takuan project.
- To be able to speak loudly in Japanese at the recital.

Learning Activities:

- Experience the process of making takuan.
- Loudly speak the hints in “The Three Hints Game” at the recital.

Vocabulary and Grammar:

- Vocabulary -
nuku(extract), arau (wash), omosa o hakaru (weigh), akai boshi (red hat), kiiroi fuku (yellow clothes), etc.
- language expression -
Daikon o hatake kara nuku. (Extract the daikon radish from the garden.)
Daikon o mizu de arau. (Wash the daikon radish with water.)
Hakari de daikon no omosa o hakaru. (Weigh the daikon radish on the scale.)
Akai boshi o kabutte imasu. (Wearing a red hat)
Kiiroi fuku o kite imasu. (Wearing yellow clothes.) etc.


Middle Grade

Study Objectives:

- Observation/Study on KNI garden – advanced: To be able to do the research on earthwarms or praying mantis, and talk about them in Japanese
- To be able to re-experience Takuan (pickled Japanese radish) project, and learn vocabulary being used in the project
- To be able to explain how your favorite kanji (Chinese character) is created.

Learning Activities:

- Experience the processes of Takuan (pickled Japanese radish) Project
- To be able to be interested in how the kanji is formed, do the research about it with Kanji dictionary. Put together a short presentation about your findings using more than 3 simple sentences

Vocabulary and Grammar:

- Vocabulary -
Shokubutsu植物 (Plant), seichou 生長(growth), hitsuyou必要(necessity), etc.
- Expressions -
--- ga sukina ### wa XXX. Suki na riyuu wa xxx dakara desu. (The reason why I like --- is xxx.)
--- dakara xxx desu (Because of ---, it is xxx.)
(Other expressions depending on what kind of interests they have, and their needs)

Upper Grade

Study Objectives:

- To learn basic Japanese geography (To be able to recognize the shape and location of 8 regions. Know the name of the ocean and countries near Japan. Know the size of Japan
- Read and understand visual materials. Compare them and point out what is in common, what it is different, using sentences, both verbally and in written form
- Actively participate in & cooperate with others for discussion, decision making process, and presentation practices.

Learning Activities:

- Reading Map of Japan. Color the map of Japan. Puzzle of Japan Reading about geography of Japan
- Reading graph showing precipitation & temperature of Japan and the US. Discuss the similarity and differences
- Plan for presentation event and practice for it

- Read and write important Environment Issue related vocabulary.
- In discussion in presentation event planning, to be able to explain your opinion to others
- In discussion in presentation event planning, to be able to express your opinion while you respect others’ opinions

Learning Activities:

- Compare precipitation now and long time ago. Think about the cause of the change.
- Understand and review weather maps which show unique Japanese weather, for example, cherry blossom front, typhoon, June rainy season.
- Write multi-paragraph report about how we can save the earth, while reviewing abnormal climate and global warming. Think about what is going on in the world, including Japan.
- Read a good-length of sentences which are written about Japanese Year-End and New Year.
- Plan & practice presentation event
