December Theme : Christmas

Class I

Study Objectives:

- Learn to write with correct posture and pressure on pencil
- Learn the origin of Christmas and welcome the holiday in good spirits

Learning Activities:

- Create Christmas cards using Hiragana learned
- Joyfully sing Christmas songs and move to the rhythm

Vocabulary and Expressions:

Collect words including the sounds “Ta, Chi, Tsu, Te, To” and learn to write them neatly and in correct stroke order

Class II

Study Objectives:

- Learn to write short letters and cards
- Learn and use the fundamental rules of the language such as sustained sounds

Learning Activities:

- Learn to write messages through creating Christmas cards

Vocabulary and Expressions:

- To/Dear OO-san, From/Sincerely, OO
- Mother, grandfather, father, sister, wolf, ice, king, etc.
- Learn the basics and exceptions of expressing sustained sounds in Hiragana

Class III

Study Objectives:

- To engage in learning Katakana
- Write one’s feelings toward Santa Claus

Learning Activities:

- Create Katakana cards
- Write Dear Santa letters

Vocabulary and Expressions:

- Katakana from “A” to “To”
- Santa Claus, Christmas, present

A - l

Study Objectives:

- Learn to clearly speak Japanese
- Learn to write Japanese with correct posture
- Review and summary of first semester

Learning Activities:

- Sing Christmas songs in Japanese (Jingle bell, Red-nosed reindeer)
- Calligraphy
- Something fun

Vocabulary and Expressions:

- Vocabulary -
Review words and kanji learned in first semester
- Grammar and Expressions -
Sentences that include words that describes time sequence (ie, first, next, lastly)

A - ll

Study Objectives:

- By observing photos from different places of the world, students can guess where they are from (by clothing, housing, and so on) – near the equator, near the North Pole, etc. Students can also indicate approximate location on a globe.
- Go over basics of penmanship.

Learning Activities:

- Make a globe
- Practice calligraphy for Kakizome (first brush-calligraphy of the year)

Vocabulary and Expressions:

- Vocabulary -
東 higashi (east) / 西 nishi (west) / 北 kita (north) / 南 minami (south), 方位 houi (bearing), etc.
- Grammar and Expressions -
*A wa B yori ….. (A is more ….. than B.) etc.

A-lll

Study Objectives:

- Understand the current situation of endangered species
- Think about what each one of us can do to protect nature and life around us
- Deepen your knowledge of Japanese Oshogatsu (New Year)

Learning Activities:

- Have a discussion with friends on what each one of us can do to protect life and enrich nature. Put together a presentation
- Write a Japanese new year card (Nengajo)
- Practice calligraphy for Kakizome (first brush-calligraphy of the year)
- Review what we learned the first trimester

Middle school

Study Objectives (December through February):

- Improve an ability to analyze what kind of influences our current society & environment experienced, during the transition of energy resources being used now and then.
- Be able to think what each of us can do in order to save energy. Be able to put the thoughts into practice.
- Be able to understand a multi-paragraph reading material on energy & environment. Be able to read and understand abstract contents.
- Look into energy being used at home, and be able to share the findings in the form of an essay, a report, or oral presentation.
- Be able to read and write, using kanji, all the main vocabulary being used on this topic.

Learning Activities:

- Review your own, or your family members’ daily life, and think about the use of energy; when & where you use it, and when and where you are saving energy
- Review your own activities for a given day, and look into where and how much energy is being used.
- Interview adult(s) around you about childhood, and look into the differences between now and then.
- Create a graph on average temperature, and look into how it has been changed.
- Read a graph showing a relationship between temperature rising and the amount of carbon dioxide emissions
- Read a multi-paragraph reading material on above (the graph)
