January Theme : The New Year

Class I

Study Objectives:

- Share the joy of the New Year with friends
- Experience and enjoy activities related to the New Year with friends
- Learn to hold a pencil with proper posture and write letters with the enough pressure

Learning Activities:

- Communicate the traditional New Year games of Japan and try playing the Karuta card game.
- Make a simple kite and play with it outside.
- Practice how to write New Year's greeting cards and write cards for friends and family.

Vocabulary and Expressions:

- Learn words that use the "na," "ni," "nu," "ne," "no" characters and learn how to write them neatly with correct character stroke order.
- Learn how to read the days of the week (Nichiyoubi [Sun] Getsuyoubi [Mon] Kayoubi [Tue] Suiyoubi [Wed] Mokuyoubi [Thu] Kinyoubi [Fri] Doyoubi [Sat]) and the calendar (1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, etc).


Class II

Study Objectives:

- Write New Year's greeting cards.
- Try doing the first calligraphy writing of the New Year and learn how to say the 12 zodiac signs.
- Take interest in vocabulary related to the New Year and write them.

Learning Activities:

- Enjoy the Japanese New Year through writing New Year's greeting cards and playing New Year's games.

- "Akemashite omedetou gozaimasu" (Happy New Year's), "Usagidoshi" (Year of the Rabbit), "Otoshidama" (New Year's Gift of Money), "Karuta" (Card Game), "Koma" (Top)


Class III

Study Objectives:

- Learn the rules of New Year's games and enjoy them with friends.
- Learn about the Zodiac animals
- Learn vocabulary relating to mochi-making and the New Year

Learning Activities:

- Karuta Card Game, Sugoroku (Board Game), Fukuwarai (Similar to "Pin the tail on the donkey")
- Listen to the origins of the animal Zodiac.
- Write New Year's greeting cards and exchange them with friends.

Vocabulary and Expressions:

- "Ganijtsu" (New Year's Day), "Omochi" (Rice cake), "Nengajou" (New Year's card), "Otoshidama" (New Year's gift of money), "Akemashite Omedetou" (Happy New Year's)

- Increase Japanese vocabulary through Japanese New Year's games.

- Karuta card game, Kendama ball game, Daruma otoshi stacking game, Hanetsuki badminton game, Top-spinning, and Kite-flying

Study Objectives:

- Being able to write Japanese words used in "Kakizome (the first calligraphy written at the beginning of a year)," shogatsu games and so on
- Playing games in groups using a compass
(some content covered in December and January was switched).

Learning Activities:

- Oshogatsu (New Year) game tournament
- Making a globe
- Homework hunt using a compass (hunting homework assignment that were hidden in the school yard like the Easter egg hunt)

Vocabulary and Expressions:

- Vocabulary -
Hatsuwarai (First smiling face), Hatsuhinode(New Year sun rise), tozainanboku (east-west-south-north), kitahankyuu (Northern Hemisphere) and minamihankyuu (Southern Hemisphere) and so on.
- Grammar and Expressions -
hajime ni ~shimasu. Tsugi ni ~shimasu. Saigo ni ~shimasu. (First, I/we do ~. Second, I/we do ~. FInally, I/we do ~.) and so on.

Study Objectives:

- Familiarize oneself with Japanese New Year through kakizome (the first calligraphy written at the beginning of a year)
- Deepen understanding of "eto (Chinese Zodiac)"
- Develop the skills to think critically about "energy" used in everyday life

Learning Activities:

- Kakizome
- Read and understand stories about eto (Chinese zodiac)
- Do research on energy used in households and think about its usage
- Compare the past and current life styles and energy use

- Vocabulary -
dengen (electrical power supply), suzushii (cool), jaguchi (faucet), ofuro (bathtub), riyoo (use), reizooko (refrigerator), denwa (telephone), denryoku (electric power), shoohi [ryo] (consumption)[amount], kadenseihin (home appliances), meisai (detailed statement/itematization)

Middle school

Study Objectives (December through February):

- Compare the past and present use of energy and develop skills to analyze its effect on the contemporary society and environment
- Think about what one is able to do and be able to apply it to one's life to conserve energy
- Be able to understand the essence of the reading material consisting of multiple paragraphs and be able to understand the abstract concepts
- Conduct a research on the household energy use and be able to give a multiple paragraph length report precisely and express one's opinions through the different mediums such as a written essay, report, and oral presentation.
- Be able to write the main vocabulary covered in this theme in kanji

Learning Activities:

- Think about one's own and one's family members' life style to find out as to when and where she/he uses and conserves energy
- Think about one's activities in a day to determine as to where and how much she/he uses energy
- Interview one's close grown-ups and find out the difference between the current and past energy use.
- Make a chart of average temperature to date and study the temperature changes over time
- Study the chart that shows the relationship between temperature rise and CO2 levels
- Read the multiple paragraph reading material that explains about the above chart
