November Theme: Thanksgiving
Class I & II
Study Objectives:
- Hold pencil with good posture and write letters with firm writing pressure
- Give thanks to workers and develop interest in a variety of work
- Give thanks to the autumn harvest and develop interest in produce
Learning Activities:
- Sing the following fall songs and dance to the rhythms: Tombo no uta, Matsubokkuri ga attatosa, and Okina kuri no ki no shitade
-Make a Thanksgiving turkey craft using leaves
Vocabulary and Expressions:
- Come up with words containing ha, hi, fu, he, ho; learn correct stroke orders of these words and their meticulous ways of writing
Class III
Study Objectives:
- Know and write the names, sizes, colors and tastes of everyday produce
- Make crafts using seasonal items from nature
Learning Activities:
- Survey of vegetables and fruits students ate
- Survey of vegetables and fruits in the refrigerators
- Leave letters
- Acorn balancing toys
Vocabulary and Expressions:
- Names of produce
- Colors (green, red, white, green-yellow, orange, etc.)
- Tastes (sweet, sour, etc.)
- Sizes (large, small, medium)
Lower grade level
Study Objectives:
- Write short sentences about their experiences at OKASHIYASHIKI (the Candy House) and read in front of other students
- Observe the growth of the daikon radish seeds that the class planted in the garden
- Read and sing poems
Learning Activities:
- Show pictures and tell the class about something students did, starting with: "Watashi wa.." or "Boku wa…"
- Record the growth of daikon with pictures and short sentences (continue until harvesting)
- Sing fall songs
- Read poems containing dates and days of the week

- Words associated with planting daikon seeds (tagayasu, daikon, tanemaki, etc.) (cultivate, daikon and seed-planting)

Middle Grade
Study Objectives:
- To be able to write a Thank-You card for Class I-III who attended ‘Okashi-Yashiki (The Candy House)’
- To be able to write observation notes on KNI garden
- To be able to read a given passage “Ari No Gyoretsu (Ants Go Marching)” by phrase or clause
Learning Activities:
- Thank-You cards
- Writes several notes observing Japanese radish (daikon) at KNI garden
- Read at loud
- Dictation (short sentences)

Learning Activities:
- Reading and/or interviewing about Christmas so students can collect information
- Write an article “Christmas in the U.S. and in Japan” for Kodomo News
- In-class debate/discussion on Christmas

Study Objectives:
- To learn to write different types of sentences, such as a letter or a report, for an appropriate occasion
- To compare winter (around Year-End & New Year) events, and analyze similarity and differences
- To compare and analyze cultures around you, and be able to write sentences about it on ‘paragraph’ level.
Learning Activities:
- Write a letter to relatives in Japan, sharig what you learned about Halloween
- Write a thank-you letter and report to Parents who participate/support ‘Okashi Yashiki’ (The Candy House)
- Read a good-length of sentences which are written about Japanese Year-End and New Year.
