February Theme : Setsubun (February 3, the day before the start of spring)

Class 1 - Ms. Ozeki

Specific Lesson Goals:
- Learn about the origins of Setsubun and participate in Mamemaki, bean-throwing
- Review hiragana characters

Class Activities:
- Make goblin masks (The students will use these hand-made masks for Mamemaki)
- Read about the origins of Setsubun
- Reading comprehension using a flash card game with all hiragana characters learned since September

Grammar & Vocabulary:
Collect words that include は、ひ、ふ、へ、ほ, and learn how to write those words in correct writing order

Class 2 - Ms. Takakura

Specific Lesson Goals:
- Participate in Mamemaki, bean-throwing
- Review katakana characters

Class Activities:
- Experience Setsubun activities -- Craft goblin masks, craft origami "sanpou"( sanpou: a wooden tray used for Shinto rituals)
- Learn when to use katakana using katakana flash cards

Grammar & Vocabulary:
せつぶん ( Setsubun ) the day before the beginning of spring
まめまき ( Mame-maki ) bean throwing ceremony for Setsubun
おにはそと ( Oni-wa-soto ) Out with the evil!
ふくはうち ( Fuku-wa-uchi ) In with fortune!
マ ma, ミ mi, ム mu, メ me, モ mo, ザ za, ジ ji, ズ zu, ゼ ze, ゾ zo,

Class 3 - Ms. Umehata

Specific Lesson Goals:
- Listen to the origin of Setsubun with interest
- Continue observing the Daikon radish plants
- Develop interest in tangrams

Class Activities:
- Listen to the Setsubun story
- Fold a Sanbou or an offering stand with newspaper and a goblin mask with origami
- Write journals from the Daikon observation
- Learn different types of triangles

Class 4 - Ms. Yamada

Specific Lesson Goals:
- Learn the origin of the bean throwing custom at Setsubun
- Become familiar with the vocabulary that describes shapes
- Create one’s own book

Class Activities:
- Listen to the story of Setsubun
- Paper crafting of a Sanbou and goblin
- Write a story by composiing three or more sentences

Class 5 - Ms. Oota

Specific Lesson Goals:
- Reading comprehension – read long instructional composition and understand each paragraph
- Through Kanji listening test, confirm how to write long vowels, geminate consonants, and syllabic nasal consonants
- Journal homework – confirm the agreement between subjects and predicates

Class Activities:
- Read the article, “The continents are moving,” and understand the relationship between the cause and effect of the main idea
- Learn the origin of Setsubun (bean throwing custom as part of Japanese traditional culture)
- Study short-sentence “proverbs” in preparation for the school presentation in March

Grammar & Vocabulary:
- Learn how to correctly place different parts of Japanese sentences, such as subjects and predicates (use printouts)
- Learn On’yomi (Chinese reading) and Kun’yomi (Japanese reading) of some of the 3rd grade level kanji as well as accurately grasp kanji as ideograph. Also, using jukugo (multi kanji compound words), increase Japanese vocabularies


Class 6 - Ms. Sakamoto

AP Course, January Lesson Plans:
- Understand how to learn Japanese as a second language by reading beginning level Japanese textbook which is used in Community Colleges
- Deepen understanding of Japanese culture by reading “Tenseijingo” in the January 1st edition of the Asahi Newspaper (read a column on celebrating Christmas as well as going to temples on January 1st and listening to the bells ringing in the new year; understand the differences between Shinto and Buddhism. Homework: write short sentences using kanji found in the AP Test and email them to the teacher for correction)
