March Theme : Hinamatsuri (March 3rd - Japanese Girls' Day Festival)

Class I

Study Objectives:

- Learn about the origin of momo-no-sekku (peach blossom festival = hinamatsuri) and develop interest in the event.
- Enjoy singing for the class performance day on the stage.
- Write the hiragana letters learned thus far firmly.

Learning Activities:

- Learn basic origami folding skills through making hinamatsuri origami.
- Get used to reading hiragana using vocabulary cards that include the hiragana letters learned thus far.
- Memorize the lyrics of the song for the class performance day so that students can enjoy singing it with confidence.

Vocabulary and Expressions:

Learn words that contain the letters ma, mi, mu, me and mo, their correct stroke orders and how to write them neatly.


Class II

Study Objectives:

- Learn the origin of Hinamatsuri and enjoy the event.
- Read the Omoide no Album poem clearly in front of an audience
- Write sounds expressed in small letters (e.g. small tsu)

Learning Activities:

- Make the obina (male doll) and mebina (female doll) for hinamatsuri using color paper.
- Practice for the class performance day in a loud voice.

Vocabulary and Expressions:

Hinamatsuri, hina-arare, obina, mebina
Kitte, sekken, kashu, kisha, isha, kingyo, etc.


Class III

Study Objectives:

- Develop interest in hinamatsuri through making of origami ohinasama and listening to hinamatsuri stories.
- Practice the play for the class performance day.

Learning Activities:

- Origami: odairisama (obina, mebina)
- Memorize lines in the play.

Vocabulary and Expressions:

Odairisama, ohinasama, bonbori, hishimochi, hina-arare, momono hana


A - l

Study Objectives:

- Give a simple explanation in Japanese on how daikon is made into takuan (pickles) through the takuan project
- Give a presentation in a loud voice at the class performance day

Learning Activities:

- Get hands-on experience of the takuan-making process.
- Give a presentation of things learned thus far at the class performance day.

Vocabulary and Expressions:

- Vocabulary -
Maku, nuku, arau, nagasa/omosa wo hakaru
- Grammar and Expressions -
Hatake ni daikon no tane wo maku (plant daikon seeds in the field), daikon wo hatake kara nuku (harvest/pull daikon from the field), daikon wo mizu de arau (wash daikon), hakari de daikon no omosa wo hakaru (weigh daikon in a scale), makijaku de daikon no nagasa wo hakaru (measure the length of daikon with a measuring tape), daikon wo tsukeru (pickle daikon) etc.


A - ll

Study Objectives:

- To be able to think about the relations between the seasonal events and climate culture in Japan.
- To be able to give directions
- Make Yomifuda (cards with words or phrases written on them) for Japanese
Karuta card game and play the game.

Learning Activities:

- To be able to correlate personal experiences with four distinctive seasons in Japan by remembering how the Odairi sama was dressed for the Hinamatsuri at the Huntington Library, or using pictures and photos as reference. To be able to identify locations on a globe.
- Preparing for the presentation event (Making of the Karuta yomifuda and reciting the words and phrases written on them in kanji characters)

Study Objectives:

- To understand and become familiar with “Hinamatsuri.”
- To research the “New Seven Wonders of the World” and to explain them orally.
- To research natural resources, waste, and recycling, and to make an oral
presentation.

Learning Activities:

- Read about and understand the origins and meaning of “Hinamatsuri.”
- Research the “New Seven Wonders of the World” and make presentation at the
presentation event.
- Investigate how much Kodomo no Ie is recycling

Vocabulary and Expressions:

- Vocabulary -
herasu (reduce), bunbetsu (sorting; separate), syurui (a kind; a sort), syusyu (collecting), shigen (natural resources), mondai (issue), nama gomi (kitchen garbage / compostable waste), shigen gomi (recyclable waste), etc.
- Grammar and Expressions -
~ suru koto ga aru (~ may happen / I often do ~)


Middle school

Study Objectives (December through February):

- To develop his/her own opinion and be able to explain it to others in a presentation.
- To be able to express one’s opinion in a discussion while being respectful to others’ opinions.
- To think about what one can do to conserve energy, and apply it to his/her everyday life

Learning Activities:

- Prepare their energy conservation plan as a presentation to the class, which children of various ages can understand. Practice the presentation within the class.
- Write a concise script about the energy consumption for the presentation.
- Write a multiple-paragraphed essay on “What I can do to conserve energy.”
- Make a list of things you can do to conserve energy, and practice them for a week.

Vocabulary and Expressions:

- Vocabulary -
sangoshoo (coral reef), kanbatsu (drought), koozui (flood), shimetsu (extinction), setsuyaku (saving), fueru (increase), shooene (energy conservation), heru (decrease), boofuu u (storm), etc. (completing the second chapter)
- Grammar and Expressions -
~ yoo ni suru (try to do ~). ~ nakutewa naranai (have to ~ / must ~).
