On November 8, 2014, more than half of the class took the SAT Subject Test Japanese with Listening. The students became understandably nervous as they had to take the test in an unfamiliar environment apart from their own schools. Furthermore, our fellow level six students have seen/experienced the unexpected: some forgetting a CD player thus losing the eligibility to take the test (Thankfully, it did not happen to our level 6 students); the test location not open at the scheduled time. Here are some of the afterthoughts shared among the test takers. On listening, “I missed capturing sounds for a moment, so I could not answer some of the questions.” (They can only listen once). On reading, “It would have been easier if I knew more kanji.” Next time you visit Japan, you could help your children consciously learn Kanji from day to day activities such as eating at restaurants, going to the bank or attending school. In class 6, we are planning a short time stay in Japan between December and February. The students will be staying at their host family’s house in Kyoto and attending high school as well as exploring different places. On each occasion, the students will try their communication skills and learn Japanese culture, which can be preparatory to simulating topics for the AP Japanese Language and Culture test. Most importantly, the experience will prepare the students to travel to Japan on their own and live there independently in the future whether they are taking the AP test or not.
