December 2015 – Merry Christmas!!!
Class 1 (Kindergarten) - Ms. Ozeki
Lesson Goals:
- Learn proper posture and pencil holding style and able to write letters with appropriate writing pressure
- Learn about the history of Christmas and anticipate the event with joy
Class Activities:
- Create Christmas cards with Hiragana words that they learned.
- Sing and dance along the Christmas songs in Japanese.
Grammar and Vocabulary:
- Collect the words with the sounds of "sa, shi, su, se, so, ta, chi, tsp, te, to" and learn how to write those words in the proper stroke.
Class 2 (Elementary Lower Grades) - Ms. Umehata
Lesson Goals:
- Learn the true meaning of Christmas.
- Be familiar with the shapes of origami
- Observations of Daikon
- Calligraphy
Class Activities:
- Christmas card making
- Keeping observation log
- Practice calligraphy
Grammar and Vocabulary:
- Origami: triangle, square
- Review first semester kanji
- New Year, calligraphy
Class 3 (Elementary middle grades) - Ms. Yamada
Lesson Goals:
- Understand and sing the Christmas songs in Japanese. (ie., Jingle bells, and Rudolph the red nosed reindeer)
- Be able to clearly read the phases on the work sheet “Calligraphy and new year greetings”.
Class Activities:
-Be able to sing the Christmas songs in class.
- Christmas card making
- Practice calligraphy
Grammar and Vocabulary:
- Be able to understand and use the new kanjis 5 kanjis weekly.
Class 4 (Elementary Upper Grades) - Ms. Oota
Lesson Goals:
- Write New Year cards (Nengajou).
- Understand the parts of kanji
- Compose seasonal (the end and the beginning of a year) greetings with subjects in a sentence matching their corresponding verbs.
Class Activities:
- Using kanji parts cards, come up with possible Kanji that makes sense for the situation.
- Understand the use of appropriate particle.
Grammar and Vocabulary:
- Study the common phrases used in new year greeting cards.
Class 5 (SAT AP Preparation) - Ms. Sakamoto
Lesson Goals:
- Discuss various customs and religious ceremonies such as : Christmas, end of the year cleaning, 108 bells, first sunrise, and other new year traditions. Be able to express their opinion on these various discussion items.
- Able to distinguish different fonts.
Class Activities:
- Work sheets
- Learn the “i-ro-ha song” for the calligraphy activity in January.
Grammar and Vocabulary:
- Study words and phrases such as :Buddhism, Shinto, stims from…, leads to …
- Writing styles - printing vs. cursive
