April Theme : Spring
Class 1 - Ms. Ozeki
Specific Lesson Goals:
- Maintain good posture when writing hiragana
- Write hiragana in the proper stroke order
- Recognize the change of the seasons and observe what Spring is like
Class Activities:
- Make a small booklet with hiranaga learned in the class
- Learn basic origami technique and make origami craft ( spring flowers )
- Learn some Japanese Spring songs
Grammar & Vocabulary:
Collect words that include ら、り、る、れ、ろ, and learn how to write those words in the correct writing order
Class 2 - Ms. Takakura
Specific Lesson Goals:
- Learn words describing movement
- Review all the grammar and katakana learned in the class and make short sentences
Class Activities:
- Make sentences using picture cards
- Word games with gestures
Grammar & Vocabulary:
あるく ( walk ) , はしる ( run) , たべる ( eat ) , つくる ( make) , わらう ( laugh ) , なく ( cry ) , けす ( erase ) , ねる ( sleep )
Class 3 - Ms. Umehata
Specific Lesson Goals:
- Spring searching
- Write journals about the KNI yard.
- Review the Kanji characters to date.
Class Activities:
- With sentences and drawing, tell the class about their yard’s findings.
- Read a long story out loud and understand the story.
Grammar & Vocabulary:
- When, where, who, what, how, sizes, colors
- “Animal babies”
Class 4 - Ms. Yamada
Specific Lesson Goals:
- Write sentences that best describe the pictures shown.
- Read descriptive sentences for comprehension.
Class Activities:
- Create a picture book using the pictures given.
- Read a non-fiction passage, “One Tree.”
Grammar & Vocabulary:
- Understand the use of punctuations (period, comma, quotation mark).
Class 5 - Ms. Oota
Specific Lesson Goals:
- Familiarize oneself with the expressions which are unique to Japanese and learn to express
feelings and sights in short sentences, such as haiku
- Learn to use proverbs and idioms
- Learn both on-reading and kun-reading for kanji, which Japanese first through third graders learn
Class Activities:
- Write haikus
- Research proverbs and idioms
- Learn various kanji radicals
Grammar & Vocabulary:
- 5-7-5 syllable sentences
- Tegakakaru, katawonaraberu, oninikanaboh, etc.
- Familiar radicals, such as nin-ben, kusa-kanmuri, etc.
Class 6 - Ms. Sakamoto
Specific Lesson Goals:
- Learn to differentiate ji(じ)and di(ぢ), zu(ず) and du(づ). Learn to write long vowels in kana.
- Research history of kanji and evoke interest in kanji
Class Activities:
- Practice 400-letter-composition (self introduction, report on history of kanji, etc.)
- Practice writing email using kana typing and kanji conversions
Grammar & Vocabulary:
- Conditional expression, “~tara”
- “~bakari” “nothing but” = “dake”
- ~tokoro (in the middle of)
- Know/don’t know when, where, who, etc. (noka wakaru, wakaranai)
