Class 1 (Kindergarten Level) - Ms. Ozeki
Lesson Goals:
- Be able to share the joy of new year
- Experience the games of "Oshougatsu" with friends
- Be able to write letters with proper way of holding pencil in proper posture
Class Activities:
- Learn traditional Japanese games for new year's day and experience Karuta card game
- Learn about Japanese style New Year's card "Nengajou" and write one to friends and family
Grammer and vocabulary:
- Find words that begin with "Na, Ni, Nu, Ne, No" and learn the proper way of writing beautifully
- Learn days of a week (Nichiyoubi, Getsuyoubi, Kayoubi, Suiyoubi, Mokuyoubi, Kinyoubi, Doyoubi) and the dates in calendar (Tsuitachi, Futsuka, Mikka)
Class 2 (Kindergarten Level) - Ms. Umehata
Lesson Goals:
- Write New Year's Card in Japanese
- Build vocabulary through Japanese New Year's Day games
- Learn about 12 zodiac.
- Learn and experience Japanese culture through Mochi pounding
Class Activities:
- Karuta card game, fukuwarai (pin the tale on donkey type of game), Kendama (ball and stick game), etc.
- Listen to the story about 12 animals in Japanese zodiac.
- Participate in Mochi pounding event
Grammer and Vocabulary:
- Memorize 12 animals' names in zodiac
- "Omedetou gozaimasu."
- "Tsuku (to pound)", "Marumeru (to roll into a ball)", "Musu (to steam)", "Usu (mortar)", "kine (pestle)", etc.
Class 3 (Elementary Lower Grades) - Ms. Yamada
Lesson Goals:
- Increase the vocabulary through Japanese New Year's day games
- Learn antonyms
- Learn study process and be able to write it down in Japanese
Class Activities:
- Karuta card game, Kendama, Fukuwarai, Daruma otoshi, Hanetsuki, Koma mawashi, Takoage etc…
- Make kite and play with it
Grammer and Vocabulary:
- Vocabulary "Ue, Shita, Migi, Hidari, Me, Kuchi, Hana, Mayuge, Mimi, Kao, Takai" etc.
- Expression "Hajimeni --- shimasu. Tsugini --- shimasu. Saigoni --- shimasu."
Class 4 (Elementary Middle Grades) - Ms. Sakamoto
Lesson Goals:
- Be able to look up unknown words in dictionary (Understand the dictionary)
- Be able to understand the context of a paragraph.
- Think about one's own body and lifestyle in Japanese
Class Activities:
- Calligraphy
- Transcription
- Read out loud the text of "Importance of chewing"
- Highlight new words and look them up in dictionary
- Put paragraphs in order from 1-9
Grammer and vocabulary:
-"Mazu, tsugini, sarani, konoyouni"
- Noun "Hataraki"
- variety of forms, such as polite form "hatarakimasu", dictionary form "hataraku", re-form "hataraite", past tense "hataraita".
Class 5 (Elementary Senior Grades) - ms. Ohta
Lesson Goals:
- Read famous Haikus outlaid to get familiar with Japanese traditional poetic rhythm of 5-7-5.
- Express what you felt with 5 senses via the sound of 5-7-5.
Class Activities:
- First Calligraphy of the year
- Read information about Haiku and several famous pieces
- Create your own Haiku, etc.
Grammer and Vocabulary:
- New Year's Greeting
- Weekly kanji and transcription
- Seasonal words, 5 or 7 words appropriate for Haiku
Class 6 (SAT/ AP Prep) - Ms. Miyajima
Lesson Goals:
- Read about Japanese Oshougatsu (New Year) rituals and customs
- Watch visual materials about Oshougatsu and write summary to present to the class
- Understand the Japanese school lives and compare it with your own school in the US.
Class Activities:
- First Calligraphy of the year
- Read and watch materials about Oshougatsu ritual and customs
- Write up a summary about Oshougatsu and present to the class
- Study Japanese high school and middle school lifestyle, compare with your own in the US and present the findings.

- Study 410 Kanjis for AP Japanese
