January Theme: New Year and Setsubun
Class I
Goals:
- To celebrate happiness of the New Year with friends through writing a New Year card, and playing New Year games.
- To get to know the history of Setsubun, and be able to happily join the Mamemaki event
Classroom Activities:
- New Year games, such as Karuta card game
- To write New Year cards to friends and family members
- To be interested in and to listen to the folk stories and histories about Setsubun
- To make devil’s mask for Setsubun : to play a role of devil and enjoy the Mamemaki event
Grammar and Vocabularies:
- To gather words starting with letter NA, NI, NU, NE, NO, and to learn right stroke orders of these letters and how to write them neatly

Class II
Goals:
- To be able to be interested in words related to New Year, and to write those words.
- To be able to be familiar with Japanese New Year through making a New Year card and playing Japanese New Year games
- To be able to enjoy the Setsubun through the Mamemaki event.
Classroom Activities:
- New Year writing with pencils
- To write a new year card neatly.
- To collect words related to New Year
Grammar and Vocabularies:
- Akemashite omedetou gozaimasu, otoshidama, karuta, koma, tatsudoshi, etc.

Goals:
- To enjoy a variety of Japanese New Year games.
- To listen to the history of the twelve animal signs of the zodiac.
- To be interested in words related to New Year and mochitsuki
Classroom Activities:
- To enjoy Karuta card game, Hukuwarai, Daruma-otoshi, Japanese spinning-top
- To listen to the story of the twelve animal signs of the zodiac
Grammar and Vocabularies:
- Words related to New Year, such as akemashite omedetou gozaimasu, otoshidama, nengajyou, and tatsudoshi
- Usu, kine, tsuku, omochi, and marumeru

Goals:
- To increase Japanese vocabularies through Japanese New Year games.
- To learn opposite meaning words
- To learn the procedure of the works, and to be able to write it in Japanese.
Classroom Activities:
- Karuta card game, Kendama, Hukuwarai, Daruma-otoshi, Hanetsuki, Japanese spinning-top, kite tec.
- To make Japanese kite
Grammar and Vocabularies:
- Ue, shita, migi, hidari, me, kuchi, hana, mayuge, mimi, kao, takai etc.
- Hajimeni~shimasu, tsugi ni ~shimasu, saigo ni~ shimasu.

A-II
Goals:
- To read a variety of poems aloud, and to be able to be familiar with its rhythms
- To be able to be interested in Japanese traditional ingredients from Japanese New Year dishes
Classroom Activities:
- To read poems with being conscious about own lip forms
- New Year calligraphy (“hikari” the kanji A-II class kids selected)
- A game of “I ate this during holiday” by collecting the advertisement of Osechi dishes
Grammar and Vocabularies:
- Names of seasonal dishes
- Words which help describe situations/things better, like onomatopoeia
- Kore (are) wa – desu ka, kore (are) wa ~ desu. Etc.

Goals:
- To be familiar with Japanese New Year culture through New Year calligraphy
- To gain understanding of Eto
- To understand the cultural differences from the pictures of “Hungry Planet”
- To know what is happening in Japan after the North-east earthquake in March 2011.
Classroom Activities:
- New Year calligraphy
- To read and understand the story of the twelve animal signs of the zodiac
- “Hungry Planet”
- To write a letter to children at Shishiori Elementary School in Kesen-numa.

Goals:
- To understand how kanji was formed and its meanings, utilizing Kanji karuta card.
- To be able to make a two-line poem
Classroom Activities:
- Group works of New Year activities, such as new year calligraphy
- A class work of making a poem with their thoughts for the stricken area of North-east earthquake in Japan
Grammar and Vocabularies:
- Basic kanjis and grammatical sentences required for Credit test J1 and J2
- Moshimo ~ tara , etc.

JFL (Morning)
Goals:
- To be able to describe objects and occurrences
- To be able to recognize places and ask/tell directions
Classroom Activities:
- To think about the practical situations through games and role-playing
- To tell classmates the recommended places to go
Grammar and Vocabularies:
- I-adjectives, na-adjectives
- Words related to roads (go straight, turn right/left, North/South/West/East bounds freeways etc)

JFL (Afternoon)
Goals:
- To be able to say basic daily activities in Japanese
- To be able to say and understand basic classroom directions.
- To experience Japanese traditional plays
Classroom Activities:
- To learn Japanese language from games and roll-playing
- To use Japanese which they already learned in class
- To think how to say in Japanese regarding what we do in our daily lives, and share the thoughts.
- To make Japanese kite and a New Year card
Grammar and Vocabularies:
- Okiru, kao o arau etc.
- Sizuka ni shite kudasai, oboete kudasai, yonde kudasai etc.
