Setsubun, the “Bean-Throwing Ceremony”

Feburary 3rd was Setsubun. We practice the bean throwing ceremony
every year at KNI.
We made our own masks, put them on, and took turns both at being the
oni (ogre) and at being the bean-thrower.
Setsubun means the time when one season changes to another, which
happens four times every year. But nowadays, it usually only refers to
changing of winter to spring.
With the turning of the seasons, we take the opportunity to make sure
that we keep growing ourselves, and drive out from our hearts the
“Scaredy-Cat Ogre,” “Get-Sick Ogre,” “Make-a-Mess Ogre,” “Bully Ogre,”
and all their nasty friends by throwing soybeans at them, which they
really hate.
It’s also said that if, on the evening of Setsubun, you eat a number
of soybeans equal to your age, you drive away illness.
After the bean throwing, we made origami boxes, and we each got
soybeans equal to our ages. We made our wishes and prayers for the
year, and ate the beans.
We hope that you’ll try having your own bean throwing ceremony at home.
