From the Director

Have you seen many of those heart-shaped Daikon sprouts in our garden? We were very pleased to add a good amount of compost into the garden thanks to your great help in bringing well-prepared wastes for the compost. The Daikon seeds started to sprout quickly, about 3 days after Sakura Class and the Saturday Japanese School friends planted them. How exciting is it to see those sprouts grow day by day… it is magical that such small seeds grow into those big Daikons!

Now it is in the middle of the fall season and the weather gets quite chilly after Halloween. We see coughs and sneezes here and there. Please take extra care of yourselves and stay healthy.

Thanks from the School

Thanks to your sincere cooperation, we were able to send the sum of the donations collected to one of KNI's alumni, Tomo Kakuno (class of 1988), who was introduced in the last month’s Newsletter, and who is currently suffering from a spine injury.

Donations included the September/October contributions, revenue from the Trick-or-Treat House event run by the Saturday Japanese School ($202.38), and heartfelt donations from all of you.

We hope it will mean something to him and his family and we wish all the best for him.

Senior Retirement Home Visit

For the first time since the semi-annual Senior Retirement Home visits started twenty-some years ago, we used a “yellow school bus” to visit the Home this year.
It was like a fun field trip being in the same bus with all our Sakura Class friends, their siblings and parents. We had so much fun singing, enjoying quizzes, watching picture-story show, and so on during the ride.
Upon arrival at the Home, Sakura friends sang, played harmonicas, and presented themselves in Halloween costumes, all of which were enjoyed by the seniors at the Home. We believe the seniors got a great vibe and energy from all of our Sakura friends. Great job, Sakura friends and thank you all!

Class Profile

Kiku Class (Mon/Wed PM)

Kiku class is filled with those who "want to do" everything with joy, including playing, singing, eating lunch and many other things. They especially like singing so much that they memorize new songs very quickly. They also like each other very much. Even when they have small fights, they go back to being friends very easily. We can always hear their chatting and laughing happily in the classroom. Let's keep on finding "something fun" together! (Ms. Iino)

Ume Class (Friday PM)

Some kids have just started coming to KNI, and others promoted to older classes, but for all of them, the past two months seemed to fly by in a blink. Everyone is full of energy to play, with smiles on their faces and curiosity in their minds. When we stand by the garden and tell kids how soil works, and how Sakura Class sowed seeds in there, they all listen to me very carefully and full of imagination. We all cheered for the seeds and wished for their healthy growth.
We always count down with a yell of "yo-i don!" to race from the garden, around the play structure and back to the shoe shelves. As kids love playing race, tag, or anything outdoor, I'd like to enjoy finding the things of Autumn to share with them, such as the sound of insects and acorns. (Mr. Narikawa)

Sakura Class (Tue/Thur PM)

This is a long list of things that the oldest kids in KNI are doing these days.
1. Hand-mopping the classroom, cleaning the rabbit house, and feeding the rabbits.
2. Practicing harmonica
3. For those who are "on duty", doing the work of the day
4. Tending the radishes in the garden
5. Organizing the book shelves, etc.
Kids in the Sakura class are filled with smiles and motivation. (Ms. Umehata)

To the parents

I am pleased to announce that all classes completed the Halloween Open House. Thank you very much for your cooperation. We found beaming faces on kids who put on the "one of a kind costume" created by you, but some of you might have been disappointed by your kids not wanting make any costumes or wear any costumes.
Only Sakura class did something else. They sewed Halloween trick or treat bag with parents, but did everybody enjoy the process?
For those of you whose kids were not motivated for this activity, please don't worry! Kids are supposed to have their own unique blue prints. They will grow at their own speed in their timeframe, learn at their paces and live with their own qualities.
So please, don't judge your kids based on social expectation, but appreciate their individual qualities and enjoy any small developments they will make day by day. We would love if you will share such exciting moments with us.
